The Township of Nipigon
Hwy. 11-17 NIPIGON – The Crossroads of Canada, “Nestled in Nature”

Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall, there’s plenty to see and do in Nipigon and the surrounding area. Snowmobiling, cross country skiing, snowshoeing and ice climbing are just a few local winter activities. After the snow and ice are gone, boating, fishing, hiking and camping draw people from around the world to this scenic centre of Canada.

The World Famous Nipigon River, which is home to world record speckled trout, is located at the cross roads of Hwy. 11/17. Anglers will also find a large variety of other fish including walleye, rainbow trout, lake trout, Coho, Chinook, pink salmon, whitefish and perch. Special regulations do apply to these waters, so check before you fish.

For more fishing information call the Ministry of Natural Resources at
  (807) 887-5000.

We have many spectacular places to visit in this area. The Nipigon Marina is located at the most northerly point on Nipigon Bay and is open June to September. It is the only place where you can cross the 49th parallel by water. A well-marked channel leads to a beautiful harbour with a marina that can accommodate vessels of all sizes. The marina provides overnight docking, gasoline fill up, showers, water, electricity, pump out service, ice and a launch ramp. Other available services include taxi, laundromat, supermarket, C& D Marine for parts, service and repairs, bank, ATM’s, convenience stores, beer and liquor outlets, and hardware close to the Marina, and fabulous shopping for the ladies in your group.

The Nipigon River Hiking Trail connects the communities of Nipigon and Red Rock. The trail begins at the Nipigon Marina and ends on the Red Rock Road just before the first set of tracks. The first part of the trail is gravelled and flat which makes for easy walking. There are several options to choose from – a short 20 minute walk from the Nipigon Marina via Clearwater Creek back to the Marina or a more lengthy stroll to Sawmill Point on Nipigon Bay. For the more adventurous, the trail continues along the bay past Sawmill Point to the new 70-foot walking bridge across Stillwater Creek. Those that reach the Stillwater Bridge may return via an alternate route through the bush, retrace their steps along the Nipigon River, or continue on to Red rock. The next portion of the trail is not for leisurely strollers. The trail the past Stillwater Creek becomes a hiking trail of medium difficulty. The trail from Stillwater Creek to Red Rock takes approximately two hours to walk. Spectacular views can be enjoyed from the lookouts over Lake Superior at the Eagle’s Nest Lookout closer to Nipigon, and two other Lookouts near Red Rock. It is nature at its best!

Maps of the trail are available at the Red Rock Municipal Office, the Nipigon Marina and the Nipigon Tourist Information Centre or phone our toll free number at 1-877-596-1359.

Just a short hike to Front Street and visitors will find the Nipigon Historical Museum, open daily during the summer, with a wealth of local and area, cultural and historic displays, some dating back to the 1600’s.

The modern, Nipigon Community Centre features an ice rink providing hockey, figure skating and recreational skating for young and old. During the off-season it is used for the Fall Fishing Festival, rollerblading, basketball and ball hockey. The well-equipped fitness centre located within the centre is open daily.

For outdoor recreation, baseball diamonds, hiking trails, tennis courts, swimming pool and golf course are available. Cross-country ski trails, extensive snowmobile trails and curling club provide winter fun opportunities.

The North Shore Golf Course is located between Nipigon and the turn off to Red Rock. Situated between beautiful mountains this nine-hole golf course is the ideal place to get away and enjoy the spectacular view and a great game of golf. The clubhouse is licensed and serves meals from 8 a.m. throughout the day. The club hosts 2 major open tournaments for players with official handicaps. The North Shore Open is held in July and the North Shore 2 Man Best Ball is in September.
All visitors are welcome and for more information please call 807-887-2006.
